Avian & Special Species
Special species pets are those who are not commonly seen in traditional canine and feline practices. The care of special species animals requires special knowledge and training, and West Hills Animal Hospital is excited to provide care for these family member pets. Dr. Julianne Vickstrom has an extensive history working with these animals and leads our special species team. The following are some examples of special species pets:
Ferrets |
Birds |
Rabbits |
Reptiles |
Hedgehogs |
Guinea Pigs |
Chinchillas |
Small Rodents |
Most special species pets have perfected the art of hiding their injuries and illnesses. Most are prey species, and an important survival skill is to mask their weaknesses to avoid being targeted by predators. Even predators will hide their illnesses and injuries. Annual wellness exams by a qualified veterinarian are important and beneficial for special species animals. During the exam, we will perform a complete physical, check for early signs of illnesses, perform the appropriate diagnostic tests, discuss nutrition and husbandry, and share any new advancements in special species medicine that may be beneficial to you and your pet.
As a full-service, companion animal practice, West Hills Animal Hospital offers services for special species pets that include but are not limited to:
- complete physical exams

- bloodwork
- fecal analysis
- urinalysis
